Radio as a Form of Media

Radio is an effective communicator in many ways. Most people in our day and age and previous ages listen to the radio often. Whether it’s on the way to work in the morning or while you’re at work radio influences us all the time. Radio is a tool of sorts to reach almost everyone. In nations that lack electricity or internet radio is the most powerful medium of communication, the biggest style of communication in Africa and its ability to reach and create change through the target audience.
In the radio segment by Felicity Ogilvie titled Hobart University students facing eviction due to housing shortage, the communicator describes the ridiculous issues with housing facing students in Hobart. The radio segment reports with a sense of communion and identity. Radio creates a more personal sense of identity than other forms of news media and it shines through in the radio segment because the very personal interview aspect of the broadcast.
The major difference and power that radio has on its audience is its ability to reach many people and catch its target audiences attention. An article like the one discussed can move a large chunk of people without having any visual aspect. “According to the UN, an estimated 44,000 radio stations broadcast to at least five billion people, representing 70 percent of the population worldwide.” (AL JAZEERA)

Ethical Standards in 7 News Article

Ethical standards should be appropriately followed by everyone, no matter their social class or status. When it is broken, false information can lead to charges being laid.
A report on 7 News.com follows these standards correctly, following New South Wales police, it features dash cam footage which reveal a police officer who is verbally harassing a citizen. The lady, only going by the title “Mai”, was told to turn into a parking lot for an RBT (Random Breath Test). She was then harassed by a nearby officer after having to wait in the line behind a van (Chapman, 2019).

Although the content displays unethical standards on the officer’s part, the report follows correct procedure. It doesn’t feature any evidence of false and misleading information, nor has any discriminatory content been included. The report includes clean and honest content.
The only possible issue which could be raised, is the consideration of a biased representation against the police officer. However, the additional footage supports an honest claim against the officer, and no further claims have been made that are not featured in the video. In addition to this, the article also ends on a positive and equal note, quoting that the “Safety of both the community and officers is paramount.” (Chapman, 2019). This reminds readers that they are not taking sides and continue to hold an equal view towards both parties.
“When she accused the officer of “harassing me for being careful”, he can be heard on the video replying: “I’m harassing you for being stupid.” “
Alex Chapman
This is quite pleasing as the publisher had the perfect chance to use this footage as leverage in negatively portraying the police force as a whole. The article could have easily been written with a strong bias against the force, yet it wasn’t. It follows correct ethical standards and keeps the slate clean, leaving the interpretation up to the belief to the viewers themselves.

Communicating on Websites
The Mackay regional website is a quite well composed, informative website if not a little overfilled. Upon opening the site, the viewer is almost bombarded with imagery from around the Mackay region. While the site does show a lot of Mackay its also quite overblown and “noisy” in its overuse of images.
According to Cenere, P. , Gill, R. , Lawson, C. & Lewis, M. (2018) noise in communication is “The loss or distortion of a message…” (Communication Skills for Business Professionals. (2018)). The Mackay Regional Council website, while very colourful also has an abundance of images throughout its page, and very little text. While one of the more effective ways of getting traffic is using images the overuse in the council website becomes unappealing and slightly over blown.
The site is filled with information on shows, events and community life in Mackay and does a decent job of displaying it. The site uses a tile system to display its information and advertise however the lack of texts makes finding events a little more difficult as they aren’t as well defined as other websites or council websites specifically.

Functionality and Improvisations
Eco projects Australia’s webpage ‘about’ is a special web page that specialises in giving information about the company and what Eco projects Australia do for clients or customers. It offers information on their expertise in the water, environmental and waterway management.
It also informs about their accreditation of environment safety and quality management system following-up with a few paragraphs of the accreditation. It also offers the company’s brochure which can be downloaded when clicked. The webpage can be improved by adding more information about what they do – such as showing photos and information about their water management to create better communication between customer and sender.
By adding photos, it can effectively create more of a connection since customers see who works at this company and who are the experienced ones. The web page can also be improved by changing the bold paragraphs into normal paragraphs. The readability of the webpage is very hard due to the slim font the page uses.
Therefore, the webpage function is to inform customers about their expertise and experience in the field of water management and water environments. They also inform their environmental safety and quality management system. The website needs several improvisations to create better communication between customers and them – such as photos and changing fonts and font weights.
Importance of Intercultural Communication
In many countries today, many people of different cultural background, ethnicity, religion and social beliefs are hired too many jobs, company and services. They are people who come from different countries.
There are also many collaborations and partnerships between companies in different countries, which require many preparations for good communication. Due to the many diverse countries and company, it is important to understand that intercultural communication is important in the workplace and during working team environments where different cultures join to create something amazing. Intercultural communication is very important in the current industry.
Intercultural communication enables the person to have the ability to deal with problems or to be able to communicate across many cultures (Burrus, 2014). To deal with different cultures and different aspects of their society can help solve things properly and can help survive and thrive to become global leaders in the world (Burrus, 2014). To not have this ability is basically asking for the backlash against the company for not having intercultural proper communication leading to bankruptcy.
Intercultural communication is also important in working team environments. In many companies, group work is usually used to create projects instead of individuals.
When people work together, there will be other members that might speak a different language or different communication styles which may create conflict and disrupt the chemistry of the group or interrupt the progress of the project. For example, many in the western world tend to be informal in speaking to other members of the group regardless of age, but for a Japanese or a Korean person, it will be different since their culture have a formal and an informal way of speaking, additionally to also respect someone who is older than them.
In some cultures, people appear to be rude and aggressive, when they talk but are just normal, however, it can appear to be rude or intimidating to the person whose culture values manners more than anything else. Therefore, learning different cultures of the other members before having a team meeting can help in having a smooth communication and can work the project effectively (Xaxx, 2019).

Modern Music Sharing
In the modern era, technology is rapidly expanding and growing each and every day. One of these factors is due to the evolving community of music sharing. Today, music sharing has become easier to acquire, easier to find and easier to access. Music can be found on YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud and Apple Music.
This rapid revolution of the music industry is a typical example of how innovation can disrupt an entire industry and make existing industry capabilities outdated (Wiktrom, 2013). The efficiency of being able to access music easily and anywhere was a factor in how music is being distributed in today’s modern world (Wiktrom, 2013). In 2003, Apple created a service titled the iTunes Music Store.
iTunes was a fundamental change in the music industry (Wiktrom, 2013). It was the first digital music store that was able to offer multiple music catalogues from different artists. Furthermore, it allowed customers to buy a song separately, instead of buying a music album. (Wiktrom, 2013).
The rise of online music sharing services, such as the ones listed above, is due to the millennial generation. They are leading the world in digital sales, therefore making popular music sharing services such as the above listed, into global leaders (McIntyre, 2016).

Personality Discussion
In week 10 of this unit we did a collection of personality tests to find out our style of communication. One of the tests was the 16Personalities personality test. This test was very useful in a few of its elements. These are:
- Its style and “personality”
- Questions posed
- Content and information
The 16Personalities website, fittingly has a very distinct style or “personality”. It has a theme of “blocky” figures and appeals to young people. The style is fitting as it offers distinct vision and different colours for different groups of personality types.
The questions within the website are direct and pointed. Compared to other personality websites they have a far more direct rather than convoluted approach. Presenting agree or disagree options such as: “People can rarely upset you” rather than employing other websites overtly complicated question style.
From this test my personality came out as “campaigner”. I think that this test provided quite accurate results in that I resonate with my personality type quite a bit. Its presentation of information was very enlightening. The individual personality type pages are set out into sections of introduction, strengths and weaknesses, relationships, friendships, etc.

After doing the personality test on the site I was immediately drawn to the strengths and weaknesses section of the website. The way the text was laid out and displayed was immediately catching and the use of text while offering strengths and weaknesses is constructively criticizing while also caters to the audience.
Overall the combination of the interesting style, use of less complicated and straight forward questions and excellent content and information on each personality type. I found that that the test was very informative and helpful in understanding my own personality and communication style.

Corporate Logos
The importance of corporate logos stems directly to the overall identity of a company. The logo is not only the first thing consumers often recognise, but also the one aspect that is embedded into their memory.
When someone is asked about a company, the first thing they envision is the corporate logo. Therefore, the function of a logo is of complete importance when being designed to present the key corporate traits accurately. This presentation can be effectively communicated through several design principles.
As stated on page 56 in Communication Skills for Business Professionals (2018), these channel types include shape, line, colour, images and symbols. The combination of these elements is what gives corporate logos such a defined and reflected image.

An example of this is the logo for the Morning Show (7 News, 2019). The first of which is the value of shape. The shaping in this logo follows an outlined shape likewise to a pebble. This could be interpreted in relation to tranquillity. In terms of colouring, the varying shades of red, orange and yellow are overlayed with a light glare, alongside several layers of blooming effects. Furthermore, the combination of these elements represent the appearance of a sunrise.
The lines used to assist in conveying these elements are curved and smooth, which reflects the calm transition into the morning news; nothing too sudden and bold for the viewers while they wake up. In terms of text, “The Morning Show” title in white, clear and contemporary fonts.
Similar to the other aspects of the logo, the simplicity of the text allows for an easy read for the first thing in the morning. The logo as a whole is nothing too complex, and the combination of the previously listed elements helps communicate the fresh values and informative assets of the company.

Another example of this visual communication is the Microsoft corporate logo (Microsoft, 2019). The image consists of four basic shapes, humorously resembling a window; this is due to their most popular product being the Microsoft Windows software. It can easily be interpreted into many shapes due to its simplicity.
An example of this is how the squares could also be interpreted as resembling computer monitor screens. In terms of colouring, the logo is built on primary colours, in addition to implementing grey colouring to its text. Similar to the Morning Show logo, this allows viewers to focus on the image instead of the text. This possibly intends to communicate the company’s focus on their product rather than their own identity.
The use of line in this image is simple and defined; there is no shading or blended tips to communicate depth. The entire logo conveys a contemporary finish. This reflects their products as being the basis and foundation for computing software and hardware.

Influential Infomercials
The power of advertising is often undervalued, with their ability to motivate and influence consumers into following their demands, advertisement are the key to everyday influential media.
They achieve this through following guidelines and implementing methods and practices into effectively persuading their viewers. An example of these advertisement types are infomercials. Designed to make their viewers feel comfortable and informed, infomercials boast a particular product and aim to sell it to their viewers.
An example of this media is the Suncorp Insurance Infomercial, portrayed on the Morning Show (Suncorp, 2015). This segment achieves this effective communication through a series of techniques. The first of these is the use of tone, where the formal yet casual tone makes viewers feel as if they’re in a meeting but are close friends where they feel comfortable with each other. This gives the viewers a sense of belonging and causes the interview to appear very welcoming.
The second communication technique which is implemented is the use of language. This is subtly influenced by a teleprompter, which although unacknowledged, guides the discussion throughout the interview and leaves the presenters only needing to worry about performing convincingly. This is enhanced through the sender. The presenter ‘Karen’ appears to be listening and comprehending the script of the guest, nodding and gesturing to continue the conversation. This, in turn, reinforces the professional yet casual tone which the infomercial aims to communicate.
This really is an amazing deal for the viewers!
The Morning Show presenter, Karen
Furthermore, the inclusion of Celebrity Craig Lowndes allows the segment to boost familiarity between the setting and the viewer. This, in addition to also promoting the idea of a famous identify supporting a brand, is intended to ensure reliability and authenticity in the eyes of the consumer.
In terms of overall communication in this advertisement, I believe it has effectively conveyed and influenced its viewers into believing they can rely on the product. Following the process of communication competence in Communication Skills for Business Professionals (2018), this piece of marketing media follows the sender, the receiver, the channel and the message, right through to the receiver, all the while effectively influencing its consumers into purchasing its product.
